Car Accidents, Personal Injury

whiplash symptomsMany personal injury victims find themselves experiencing some of the symptoms of whiplash in the days and weeks following an accident.

Depending upon the severity of a victim’s injury, their symptoms may range from mild stiffness or pain to immobility, severe headaches and cognitive issues.

Before addressing some of the more common whiplash symptoms, it’s worth noting that whiplash is a non-medical term that is used to refer to a variety of injuries.

In most cases, whiplash injuries involve a sprain or strain of the neck. Sprains involve injuries to ligaments, while strains involve injuries to muscles and tendons.

Neck Stiffness and Pain

The most common symptom of whiplash tends to be stiffness and/or pain in the neck. Whiplash victims often feel little to no discomfort in this area at the scene of an accident with symptoms that take 24 hours or more to appear.

Headache

Whiplash injuries also can cause mild to severe headaches. Headaches associated with whiplash injuries typically originate near the back of skull.

Shoulder Stiffness and Pain

Some whiplash injuries can cause stiffness and/or pain in the shoulders as well as the neck. In some cases, there may be discomfort in between the shoulder blades as well.

Dizziness

Vertigo and dizziness are also reported by some whiplash injury victims. These symptoms should be short lived following an accident. Persistent dizziness, vertigo or blurred vision may be a symptom of a more serious condition and require additional medical attention.

Trouble Concentrating and Other Symptoms

Whiplash injuries can also result in some cognitive and emotional symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, fatigue, insomnia and irritability.
