Truck Accidents

tired truck driversTruck driver fatigue is an often underestimated factor in accidents involving trucks across the country.

Many times, fatigue is linked to drivers who work too much and push beyond the Hours of Service rules. These drivers often manipulate their log books to make it seem like they are not pushing beyond these boundaries.

What is the Hours of Service rule?

The Hours of Service rule is set by the federal government in an effort to keep the roadways safe by limiting the amount of time that truckers can remain behind the wheel in a given day.

Why do truck drivers ignore the Hours of Service rules?

Many times, truckers ignore the Hours of Service rules in order to meet an employer-set deadline. Drivers are often required to deliver certain amounts of cargo in a certain amount of time. When this doesn’t happen, some truckers falsify their log books and work more hours in order to meet their deadlines.

What happens when truck drivers push the boundaries of driving hours?

When truckers push themselves to drive more hours than they should, the end result is a fatigued driver. This is a very dangerous situation as this poses a great risk of the driver falling asleep while at the wheel. In addition to falling asleep, fatigue can also reduce a driver’s reaction time and make them more likely to make driving errors.

Other dangers associated with driving a truck:

Although fatigue can be particularly dangerous for truck drivers, there are other reasons why truck drivers can become dangerous on the roadways and they are as follows:

  • Inexperience or not understanding how to properly maneuver their vehicle.

  • Taking over-the-counter medications that reduces their reaction time.

  • Taking illegal drugs. This is sometimes noted as a method of staying awake.

  • Speeding to make a deadline or just speeding in general.

  • Distracted driving.
